BT Workstyle's Flexible Working
A true success story of work from home jobs, working from home UK, home based flexible jobs and remote working is BT, one of the South East's largest private sector employers.
To remain competitive and responsive, BT has adapted the way it manages people and the way they work. The company has what it believes is one of the largest flexible working projects in Europe called "BT Workstyle". Flexible working is available to almost everyone and the company now has more than 70,000 flexible workers.
"Flexible working is business as usual" says Mike Galvin, South East Regional Director for BT Group. "Already seven out of 10 people work flexibly and nearly 10% are home based. It has saved the company millions in terms of increased productivity and cut costs. It has also motivated our people and released more potential."
BT identified that their workers fell into three categories: mobile, home based, and office based. Each of these categories overlap and a procedure based on flexiblity as opposed to grade, job function and location is the best approach.
Galvin evangelises flexible working as a vital part of remaining competitive in this rapidly-changing internet age. He believes it is one of the key tools to reduce cost structure and offers a vibrant, compelling approach to employment opportunities.
"As a leader of flexible working in the UK, BT is seeing huge benefits both for the company and its people" says Galvin. It has been absolutely beneficial to increasing productivity and reduced our need for office space, resulting in annual savings of £88 million on overheads, reducing our need for office space. For example we had 23 offices in London and now have only five. We have 70, 000 flexible workers of which 11.5% are home based.
"We would certainly encourage employers across the UK to take full advantage of the great opportunities offered by smarter working. With the cost of transport continuing to rise there couldn't be a better time for people and organisations to ask themselves whether they could work more flexibly."
